Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe is an introductory survey of the universe, its formation and evolution, the nature and origins of stars and galaxies, the origins of solar systems including our own, and how humans have come to our current understanding by applying the process of science. You will develop an understanding of basic principles and methods used in astronomy and astrophysics to study the universe through observation, measurement, evaluation of data, and development and testing of scientific theories. This is an introductory course that does not assume a science and mathematics background.

This nearly two-week-long summer program lets you experience college life, meet new friends, dive into cool STEM projects and basically have a blast using all the knowledge you’ve gained in 11 years of school.

You will be out in the field during this course, developing your skills in nature observation and animal tracking in the context of modern ecology. You will become familiar with the details of the lives of local wildlife including coyotes, deer, foxes, raccoons, opossums, weasels, mice, and bobcats. Topics and skills covered include local natural history, wildlife habitat assessment, clear print track identification, wildlife conservation, and the role of humans in today's ecosystems.

The Pre-College Programs are designed for academically curious high school students interested in the intellectual challenge of Ivy League academics. Students enroll in credit-bearing undergraduate courses from a wide array of disciplines taught by Penn faculty, staff, and visiting scholars and are in class alongside other Penn undergrads. A majority of the courses are 1 credit until (c.u.)* unless the course has a required lab, and then the course is generally 1.5 c.u.

Choose from Duke University courses from across the arts and sciences! A selection of six-week undergraduate courses in Summer Session Term 2 (July 1 – August 11) are available to academically qualified high school students. Participants must be 16-years-old by the first day of the term (July 1) to be eligible. Credit options for high school students include courses at Duke University for local commuter students and online courses for non-commuters, including international high school students.
