Boston Conservatory at Berklee Vocal/Choral Intensive is a two-week summer program for high school–aged singers who are focused on classical singing or musical theater. Taught by Conservatory faculty who have years of experience training young singing artists, this is a chance for young performers to explore their abilities as solo performers and to begin to discover the many professional and educational options available to them as they move forward in their artistic lives. The Vocal/Choral Intensive curriculum is focused on strengthening students’ foundational and performance skills, through performance classes, movement and bodywork, repertoire classes, theory and sight-singing classes, and a devised acting project. Each student will receive coachings and voice lessons and experience master classes with Boston Conservatory faculty. At the conclusion of the program, students can expect to be more complete artists with stronger musicianship skills and more polished performance techniques. They will have a clearer idea of their own artistic and educational goals, and a better sense of the questions to ask. In addition, they will meet talented peers who share their passion for singing and music, and who will help each other become more purposeful and engaging storytellers through song.

The Summer Residential Program will take place in Iowa City, Iowa on the University of Iowa campus. Students at the program will spend 2 weeks deeply immersed in the art and craft of creative writing. Each student will take one core course for the duration of the session. The core courses are taught by graduates of the renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop and by graduates of University of Iowa MFA programs in playwriting and nonfiction writing. Students may select a core course in fiction writing, poetry writing, or creative writing (which includes some combination of fiction, poetry, and personal essay). We also offer core courses in TV writing and playwriting. Students will share their writing with teachers and peers, receive constructive critique, and participate in writing exercises and activities.

Each morning, students will train with Shakespeare Festival Teaching Artists – engaging with Shakespearean scripts, stagecraft, and stage combat (en guarde!) Students will exercise their voice and movement skills, developing the same techniques used by professional performers to bring complex texts to life! After lunch, students will rehearse with their peers, preparing an abridged production of either Macbeth or Twelfth Night (for ages 9-13) and Hamlet or As You Like It (for ages 14-19). These will be performed for family and friends on the mainstage at Shakespeare’s Glen in Forest Park (June 13 and 27).

This camp provides a magnificent opportunity for campers to become immersed in a magical theater production. Our campers will learn to dramatically articulate a character, construct simple props and scenery, and put on a one-act production.
