Digital/data agility – the ability to source, clean, categorize, analyze, visualize, and publish data – is among the most in-demand skillsets in the university environment and of course for professionals entering the modern workforce. Accomplishing all those needs requires tools, and R/R Studio is at the center of the analytics and information explosion. This hands-on course is designed for high school student who wants to power up their critical thinking and data skills. It is not a programming camp in the classic sense. Students do not write programs to do things (e.g. write a program for an accountant to use). Rather, the camp attendee will develop digital and data literacy using R as the tool through which they enable and enhance their ability to derive insights and inform business decisions through skillful data consolidation and analytics. Microsoft Excel will also be emphasized, using graphs, charts, analytic add-ins and statistical functions. During their experience, camp attendees will be introduced to and use basic statistical concepts. Upon completing this camp the student should • Have gained the ability to use R for immediate application in classroom projects, papers, research and analyses • Develop basic familiarity with statistical concepts, methodologies and random sampling • Accumulate experience with resources that enable the student to further their development individually even after the camp completes • Learn that statistics – yes statistics – and making data dance is fun! No prior programming experience required – basic keyboarding ability, and nothing more. Camp attendees must bring their own computer; Windows or Apple / Mac work equally well. iPads/tablets will not work.
