The Impacts of Robotics on our World The robotics engineering course is designed for high-school students to provide them with understanding of robotics as an engineering discipline. The participating students will learn about a number of newly emerging robotics technologies and their impacts on a variety of areas ranging from industrial sectors, such as manufacturing, medical, defense; home assistance to elderly and disabled people; to improving learning for autistic children/students. The main goal of the course is to motivate the students in pursuing robotics as an engineering discipline by providing them an introduction to behind the scenes science and art of robotics. The course will involve interactive and fun-filled group sessions that include video lectures, interacting with real world robots, and hands-on programming.

Intro to Human Anatomy & Physiology through Direct Examination, Simulation, and Dissection Offered this summer, our Human Anatomy and Physiology course is the perfect starting point for students interested in learning more about entering the medical field. This course is all about systemic human biology, or how the heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal and nervous systems work together to help you function. Through this session, we will be examining the way that people are put together and how the systems of the body work together through direct examination, similar to what you would see at a doctor’s office, all while learning the basics of how to complete a physical exam. You will also learn through simulations using practice dummies or high level computers.

The Structure of the Brain and its Connections - A Pre-Med Exploration In this course students will learn about the structures inside of the brain and spine, and how they connect and send messages throughout the body. This course will provide you with hands-on opportunities to explore the fields of anatomy and neuroscience. In this one-week course we will dissect sheep brains, bovine spinal cords, and bovine eyes, and also use models and activities to understand how brain works at large.

Is medicine the right career for you? Medicine is a long term commitment and requires many years of training. For many students, it is a dilemma to decide whether medicine is their career path. In this course, students are introduced to the practice of medicine and what it is like to be a physician. Students will tour the UConn John Dempsey Hospital and see how a hospital functions. This course gives you an opportunity to discuss your questions and concerns directly with a variety of physicians who are passionate about their work. Through these interactions, students will learn about these different career paths, and will be able to gain knowledge about their future career in a medical profession.

Politics, Law, & Economics (PLE) is a session aimed at students with an interest in understanding diverse economic theories, the values and practices of government, and legal frameworks in historical and comparative perspectives. Students learn key ideas in topics such as public policy, human rights, market regulation, governance structures, international policy, and conflict and cooperation across borders.

Are you interested in exploring the world of animation and design? Our Pre-College Summer Animation course offers high school students an introduction to the basics and history of animation. Students will learn: Traditional cell animation Cut paper animation Stop motion animation. During this one-week session, students will gain an understanding of the “tricks of the trade,” storyboard development and character development. The class will also dig into contemporary topics such as collaborative storytelling and navigating multiple animation techniques within a single production. This class will offer students an opportunity to learn Dragonframe, the software program that is an industry standard for stop-motion animation. This is great insight to the process used by professional studio animators.

Watercolor is a popular medium for professional artists and illustrators. Historically, the scale of watercolors has ranged from the miniature to the monumental, and the portability of watercolor has made it the favored medium for travelers.

Do nations have identities? What do people mean when they say “identity politics”? It is truly interesting to see how the identity of a nation and the identity of the individuals living in that nation influence one another. Personal and group identities are inherently complex things, because both individuals and nations carry more than just one identity “label”; rather, we prioritize and emphasize our different identities in response to our environment. If this is the case, how do instances of hate politics, conservative/liberal leadership, or major Supreme Court decisions affect a nation’s identity?

Sports, Statistics, and Science Data science is a fast developing science of extracting meaningful information from massive data for better decision making. It is interdisciplinary by nature, involving statistics, computing, and domain knowledge. As an example, sports analytics use all available sports data to make better decisions across the whole spectrum of the sports industry business. Students taking this class will get the chance to: Dig deeper into the intersections of reality and technology through engaging lab sessions Learn the basics of data science computing skills - data manipulation, visualization, and analysis Try their hand at baseball analytics Immerse themselves in the work of a data scientist by web scrapping for sports data After taking this class, students will have a basic understanding of the essential components of data science as well as the basic computing skills needed to explore this field further independently. They will also have hands on experience in sports analytics - a useful skill for academics, hobbies, and various professions.
