UC Santa Barbara's Summer Research Academies offer a dynamic summer experience that engages qualified high school students in project-based, directed research in STEM, Humanities, and Social Sciences fields. Students will take a 4-unit university course in which they choose and develop a research topic specific to the track they select, under the direction of an instructor who is conducting active research in that field.

In NYFA’s teen summer camps and filmmaking workshops, students aged 14-17 build skills in filmmaking and content creation through hands-on experience. Throughout the course of the film camps and workshops, our faculty of professional filmmakers and directors teach filmmaking for teens, training aspiring storytellers to write, shoot, direct, and edit their own original content. For those who complete our level-one classes that cover the fundamentals of filmmaking, we also have a selection of level-two classes. In these classes, students build upon the techniques and knowledge learned in our level-one camps and workshops.

During this intensive filmmaking camp, students who have taken the twelve-weekend camps or the three, four, six-week camps may return to further their skills in visual storytelling and content creation. NYFA’s dynamic one-week acting camp gives teens the chance to explore their interest in acting for film. In just a week, students aged 14-17 build basic acting skills through in-class instruction and on-camera exercises. Studying under the supervision of professional actors and directors, students learn how to tap into their natural talent. No experience is required to attend.

During NYFA’s three-week summer camp for acting, aspiring young actors work in an environment that reflects the many demands of a film set. Throughout the camp, students get the opportunity to audition for and act in other students’ films, providing them with a considerable amount of time to practice their on-camera skills. Students also complete an assigned scene as well as a monologue on-camera directed by faculty, recorded by staff, and edited by our in-house editor. At the end of the program, students receive an edited digital copy of their work. For graduates, there will be a final screening for family and invited guests.

In our documentary filmmaking summer camp in Los Angeles and New York, students aged 14-17 learn how to make a documentary film. During this summer camp, students build foundational skills in producing, directing, camera, lighting, production sound, and editing as they create their own unique content. Through hands-on training and first-hand experience, students learn vital non-fiction storytelling techniques, how to present and discuss their ideas, as well as receive creative feedback.

In an environment centered on mathematics, participants explore current lines of mathematical research, the historical development of important areas of mathematics, and applications across scientific disciplines.
