Make this a productive summer for you at the MICDS Youth Leadership Institute (YLI). Do you know a rising 7th to 10th grader looking to take their leadership skills to the next level? Look no further! YLI’s summer program is designed to empower young leaders to harness and develop the skills and confidence needed to make a positive impact in their community and prepare for the next steps in their education and beyond.

A strong start for high school science is key to success. STEM 0.5 is a way for students to learn important information and practice foundational skills necessary for success in the 9th-grade science course. Topics and skills include data collection, experimental design, graphing and data analysis, and dimensional analysis. In addition, we will use the Maker Space to complete a few engineering challenges.

The integrated mathematics track requires a strong foundation in algebra and geometry concepts. This course will provide a review of important math topics to help students retain or (re)build the necessary understanding to find success in Applied Integrated Mathematics 2 or Integrated Mathematics 2. Using an individualized approach, students will improve their algebra skills while exploring meaningful problems that require knowledge of crucial math concepts – including, but not limited to, properties of quadratic functions, function notation, function transformations, etc. The course will review several geometry concepts needed for Integrated Math 2 or Applied Math 2 as well as geometry topics that are on the ACT. The course will focus on building problem-solving techniques in preparation for the type of work required in the 10th-grade courses.

Are you looking to boost your grammar skills and gain confidence in your writing this summer? Join Dr. Miller for an engaging and interactive “Grammar Boost Camp” designed specifically for seventh-grade and eighth-grade students.

This camp will focus on the fundamental game of baseball. We will set a tempo to ensure each athlete has the opportunity to display their athleticism while learning and growing their knowledge and confidence in the game. 

Campers will be divided by age and skill over the course of the week. Fundamentals will be stressed daily with an emphasis on dribbling, passing, and shooting. All campers will participate in daily contests and games culminating in Finals Friday.

Basketball (Athletic) Camp

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. This camp will focus on instructional drills, fun games, and interactive activities. The camp is designed for participants to learn the fundamentals of Pickleball including the rules of the game, the different parts of the court, serving, scoring, and the basic forehand shot.  

Our High Performance Tennis Training Camp is designed for beginners to national players. The highest level of coaching is the key component of our tennis program. Our instructors have taught all levels of tennis from beginner to professional. On the first day of camp we access and start the process for developing an individual tennis plan for each student; but what makes us different is our training system. In the MAC gym at MICDS we have put together 20 plus individual tennis training stations. This allows our campers to hyper focus on learning and perfecting their tennis skills and at the same time have FUN in a challenging environment.

Computational Thinking centers on solving problems, designing systems, and understanding human behavior. It has applications not only in computer science but also a myriad other fields of study. This introductory-level course focuses on thinking computationally, especially understanding how computer scientists define and solve problems.

Cybercriminals leverage technology and human behavior to attack our online security. This course explores the fundamentals of, and vulnerabilities in, the design of: Computers (computer components, connectivity); Networks (design, Domain Name Services, and TCP/IP, hubs, switches, and routers); and The internet (DNS, HTTP, routing protocols, and access control for internet devices).

This course connects students interested in creative writing (primarily short fiction) and provides a space for supportive and constructive feedback. Students gain experience in the workshop model, learning how to effectively critique and discuss one another’s writing in an online environment. In addition to developing skills as readers within a workshop setting, students strive to develop their own writing identities through a variety of exercises.
