Metro Theater Company and Saint Louis University invite high school students to explore advanced acting, movement, improvisation, stage combat, and audition techniques with professional theater artists! Students will have access to SLU’s college level facilities as they create original work and perform scenes and monologues. Students will also have the opportunity to visit and tour Metro Theater Company to see what a day at a professional theatre is like. All skill levels are welcome. Lunch will be provided daily by SLU dining. There will be a performance for family and friends on the last day of camp.

This course presents students with an opportunity to expand their understanding of drawing fundamentals by considering and utilizing nontraditional materials and methods. Through lectures, demonstrations and reviewing artists’ works, students come to see drawing as a way of thinking through visual and conceptual problems, allowing them to see how to develop visual languages that can address issues and areas of personal interest.

SVA's BFA Illustration program is pleased to present an all-new online Pre-College program for Summer 2021. This three-week course will combine elements of observational drawing, narrative storytelling and limited animation. Using wet and dry media combined with digital tools, students will learn how to animate their drawings into GIFs and develop a cohesive narrative through a series of projects. This course will help young artists develop new skills and strengthen their portfolio through a unique combination of illustration, cartooning and animation techniques.

Create art projects exploring a wide variety of drawing and sculptural mediums to make portfolio-quality work. In this course students will learn to draw and sculpt from direct observation as a foundation to develop their creative expression. Students will explore conceptual thinking and will develop project proposals based on individual portfolio development goals. Materials will include pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic paint, magic-sculpt, wire and assemblage, among other drawing and sculpture mediums. Experimental work is encouraged. The course format will include step-by-step demonstrations by the instructor, group discussions and critique that will encourage development of vocabulary specific to visual art, individual instruction and feedback, and lecture presentations of past and contemporary artists. The subject matter for inspiration will include figure, nature, animals, imagination, music, and more. Students will experience technical processes of art-making through hands-on projects, as well as be able to analyze the subject and form of artworks. No previous experience required. The teacher will encourage students and gear instruction toward their individual level of experience. Please note: Course curriculum and faculty are subject to change.

How can we design buildings that support us inside and out? Our prompt will be to design a building that can not only support the health and well-being of its inhabitants during a time of shelter-in-place (due to pandemic, war or natural disaster), but also contribute to the prosperity of the larger community in times of peace. Through a process of research and iteration of concepts, students address this critical question by expanding upon notions of sustainability and adaptability.

Animation majors at SVA are skilled artists and storytellers who come to understand the mechanics of movement through a solid foundation in drawing, narrative development and principles of animation. The purpose of this Pre-College program is for students to gain a basic understanding of the 2D animation production process, from learning the foundations of drawing to creating digital animation through the Adobe Animate pipeline. Students will begin with an introduction to both drawing and animation in the first week, moving to study the intersection between animation and storytelling in the second week. The program will conclude with a focus on how to prepare an animation portfolio for college admission. Please note: Pre-College courses may include the use of nude models. Course curriculum and faculty are subject to change.

In this course students are asked to push the boundaries of defining the feminine in fashion.
