This course provides a broad introduction to American constitutional law and to contemporary debates about civil rights and civil liberties in the United States. Students learn about fundamental principles of constitutional interpretation, the basic legal limitations on governmental power, the relationship between law and society, and arguments around controversial topics such as free speech, freedom of religion, government surveillance, and balancing individual rights with public health during a pandemic. In the process, students also deepen their understanding of US politics and see how the judiciary often functions as a key player in our political system.
