This course focuses on contemporary issues of governance, representation, and power through the lens of the American presidency. From this vantage, the course will trace major transformations in American politics, investigating shifting power relations between the presidency, Congress, and the courts, the evolving role of “the public” in the government’s decision-making processes, and the influence of parties, partisanship, and polarization in shaping the politics and social relations of the day.
