Dig into journalistic techniques and stylistic tricks to tell effective, meaningful sports stories in a variety of forms. It’s no wonder that sports journalism is a dominant part of many media outlets. When it comes to good stories, sport has it all: the glory of winning, the agony of defeat, heroes, underdogs, human characters with their strengths and frailties. And when it comes to sports, New York City is king. This course will teach students how to capture these sports stories in words, pictures and sounds. Through a combination of writing exercises, class discussions, guest speakers, site visits and attendance at sporting events, students will develop basic reporting and storytelling skills: interviewing, news judgment, researching and writing compelling articles. Students will practice thinking like reporters, ridding their writing of clutter, fact-checking their work and keenly observing the sport landscape in a city where there is no shortage of stories to tell.
