Throughout history, scientists and lawmakers have turned to principles of philosophy to work through complex ethical issues surrounding the various uses of scientific technology, including abortion, vaccine research, experimental drug trials, stem cell transplants, genetic testing, and genetically engineered foods. This course examines issues like these and the overarching ethical questions they pose to society. You and your classmates will analyze primary philosophical works to learn the classical foundations of ethical reasoning, the underpinnings of logical argumentation, and philosophical methodologies, and then apply philosophical frameworks as you participate in discussions and debates, and write analytical essays to work through complex ethical dilemmas.
