The Earth, The Environment, and You Geoscientists study all aspects of the Earth, including its history, structure, rocks, soils, rivers, oceans and atmosphere. In doing so, geoscientists play a crucial role in understanding and making predictions about a diverse range of earth resources, processes and hazards, from mineral deposits to earthquakes to floods and climate change. Our Geoscience pre-college course provides a hands-on experience that integrates lectures on background geoscience material with field and laboratory techniques to highlight how Geologists read rocks, sediments and landscapes. Specifically, students will learn how to: Analyze the mineralogy and geochemistry of rocks and soil Collect and analyze water samples Collect and analyze a sediment core Understand and interpret the geologic history of Connecticut This course will involve frequent off-site visits to UConn Forest and field settings within 10 minutes of Storrs Campus. Supervised transportation is provided by the program and is included in the course cost. Students will have access to Department of Geoscience equipment and facilities. Students will need to be prepared with the proper attire to work in the rain and mud. Note: To be eligible to enroll in Geoscience, students need two years of high school science and math through Algebra I.
