Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes - Authentic Authorship

This class will challenge students to view themselves not just as writers, but as authors. Through group workshops and instructor feedback, students will hone their individual writing voices, more confidently generate their own creative pieces, and ultimately recognize their unique strengths as authors. Students will develop their abilities to consider audience, purpose, and literary devices as they practice different strategies for starting a writing assignment, developing drafts, and finishing and polishing a written piece. Throughout the course, we will read and discuss creative nonfiction and expository writing pieces from a variety of genres, including persuasive, environmental, vignette, comparative, and exposé. By the end of the course, each student will have created a portfolio of pieces that highlight their authentic voice and craft.
