The Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) is a six-week residential summer program at Carnegie Mellon University for minoritized student groups interested in pursuing STEM-related undergraduate majors. The program offers two distinct cohorts for rising seniors and a smaller cohort for rising juniors. Admitted students engage in a rigorous curriculum taught by our world renowned faculty and staff who are deeply committed to student success. Selected students have an opportunity to choose from two different academic tracks; Science and Engineering, and Computer Science. Both tracks allow students to develop deeper understanding in areas such as mathematics, physics and computer programming via traditional classroom instruction and hands-on projects. Carnegie Mellon is committed to expanding the pool of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds who want to pursue STEM disciplines. The admissions process for SAMS is competitive so students are encouraged to apply early. The preferred deadline is February 15. Students admitted to the Summer Academy of Math and Science will not be charged tuition, housing or dining fees. However, a nonrefundable commitment deposit is required upon acceptance to the program. This deposit will be credited to the students’ account to utilize at their discretion after arrival to campus. Lastly, SAMS Scholars are responsible for books, supplies, transportation and selected recreational expenses. We have a limited number of scholarships available for transportation and book costs. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Applications are made available upon request to the SAMS Office. Application process includes: application, family and student information, transcript, standardized test scores, 2 letters of recommendation (one must be from a STEM teacher), 5 short answer essays.
