In this program you’ll gain an understanding of the nature of poverty and the tools that can be used to fight it. Through the lenses of both macro- and microeconomic theory, you’ll consider factors that contribute to poverty such as scarcity, market failures, various shocks and stressors, and weak formal institutions. You’ll look at economic growth; structural changes that occur in economies as incomes rise; the role of agriculture and international trade in development; food security and nutrition; and the role of gender inequality in poverty and development. You will also consider the limits of economic study in understanding development and the many tradeoffs involved in the development process. You must have completed successfully an AP microeconomics class or the equivalent to apply. No calculus is required for the course, but there will be light use of algebra, statistics, and mathematical reasoning. Application process includes: online application, 3 personal statements, application fee, transcript, grade report, standardized test scores, letter of recommendation. Need based financial aid is available with the completion of an additional scholarship application.
