“The only thing constant in life is change,” says the philosopher Heraclitus. Yet some changes, historians tell us, were more significant than others and- - through numerous connections and instances of cause and effect - - have have had such significant changes upon or mindsets that they have essentially “changed our universe.” In this course, we will examine the events, inventions, and discoveries that have perhaps forever changed our reality and investigate how basic ideas of love, beauty, heroes, failure, manners, and the like have changed dramatically over the centuries. Then again, there others who suggest that change and progress are mere illusion and that history is “eandem, sed aliter” (the same, but different). Join us as we trace the origins of basic attitudes from humble and often totally unrelated beginnings in The Day Everything Changed. The Drury Leadership Academy is carefully planned for college-bound students who have completed the freshman, sophomore, or junior year in high school. The objective of DLA is to provide students with opportunities to learn about and practice leadership skills which will enhance their quality of life and prepare them to assume future leadership roles in our society. The Academy curriculum is a pre-college curriculum designed to use logic and reason to analyze complex issues, to communicate clearly, to weigh decisions with balanced perspectives, to accept responsibility, and to care about others. The intensive two week program provides a strong preparation for college classes and residential life in a supportive environment that encourages personal growth. Classes meet Monday –Saturday the first week and Monday – Wednesday the second week. On the last Thursday there is a Closing Ceremony in Findlay Student Center Ballroom. Classes meet 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. After a stimulating day, students enjoy a variety of extra-curricular programs. The afternoons allow for free time and outside activities. The library, bookstore, CX, gameroom, and sports facilities are conveniently located near the residence hall. For those students desiring quiet or study time, the hall remains open for their convenience. Three complete meals are served daily and are shared as a community. Snacks are provided occasionally in the evening, but students are permitted to provide their own snacks or to order fast food during the specified times. Each night of the week provides activities such as trust-builders, community-builders, or some sort of entertainment. Guest speakers will occasionally present materials on current issues or provide important information for all college-bound students. DLA students may enroll for 1 hour of college credit (at no additional cost) for each class, on the first day of class.
