In this biology class, students will work together through interactive and hands-on methods to gain a better understanding of the cellular and molecular underpinnings of cancer. Students will gain a solid understanding both of the basic biological mechanisms of cancer and of current approaches to identifying, detecting, and treating this "Emperor of All Maladies", including exciting novel therapies that may enable researchers to finally win society's longstanding battle against cancer. Throughout the course, students will learn about cutting-edge cancer research happening at Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute and will gain first-hand experience with lab techniques used by cancer researchers today. Prerequisites: Honors, IB or AP Biology. Lab ($50). The Emory Pre-College Program (noncredit) offers students an opportunity to preview the best of college life: from compelling non-credit courses taught by renowned faculty to life on a vibrant campus, from becoming an active participant in the university, local, and global communities to developing friendships with other students from around the world. Emory Pre-College students will experience a challenging college-level academic course, but they will also gain exposure to other academic disciplines, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and residential college life. Emory Pre-College students may enroll in two-week noncredit courses or a three-week institute. Time is set aside during the afternoon most weekdays for College 101. Presentations are designed to help high school students prepare for their college admission process and beyond. Coupled with their academic work, College 101 programs will help equip students to understand and prioritize what to look for in a college and to hit the ground running when they do arrive at their college of choice. Application Fee - $70* Fee is waived for returning Pre-College students and students who receive free or reduced lunch. Send an email to precollege@emory.edu to let us know.
