Taught by Emory Law School faculty, this course introduces students to the study of law in the United States. Students will study core areas of law, read and analyze historic judicial opinions, and debate some of the thorny questions our legal system presents. In addition, they will participate in simulated exercises to discover what it really is like to practice law, balancing the dual nature of a lawyer’s role as both a proactive, problem-solving advocate and as an advisor who advocates for clients within the United States litigation system. Course includes field trips and concludes with students delivering a formal oral argument. The Emory Pre-College Program (noncredit) offers students an opportunity to preview the best of college life: from compelling non-credit courses taught by renowned faculty to life on a vibrant campus, from becoming an active participant in the university, local, and global communities to developing friendships with other students from around the world. Emory Pre-College students will experience a challenging college-level academic course, but they will also gain exposure to other academic disciplines, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and residential college life. Emory Pre-College students may enroll in two-week noncredit courses or a three-week institute. Time is set aside during the afternoon most weekdays for College 101. Presentations are designed to help high school students prepare for their college admission process and beyond. Coupled with their academic work, College 101 programs will help equip students to understand and prioritize what to look for in a college and to hit the ground running when they do arrive at their college of choice. Application Fee - $70* Fee is waived for returning Pre-College students and students who receive free or reduced lunch. Send an email to precollege@emory.edu to let us know. Deposit - $350 non-refundable; payable upon acceptance to program, secures enrollment and counts towards the total cost of the program. Program cost covers the cost of all programs and off-campus events. Residential fees include room and board and three daily meals. Financial aid is available with the completion of a supplementary application and financial documentation. The preferred financial aid deadline is May 1st. Application process includes: application, transcript, standardized test scores, teacher recommendation.
