Beginning with Emancipation, the course traces the evolution of black culture and identity and the continuing struggle for freedom and equality. Topics include the tragedies and triumphs of Reconstruction,interracial violence, black political and institutional responses to racism and violence, the Harlem Renaissance, jazz, blues, and the civil rights and black power movements. You will write and edit essays based on key themes in the films and readings.
Camp 4 Scholars is open to both rising seniors and juniors. The program uses the disciplines of Neuroscience, History, English Composition and the Visual Arts to develop critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills. Students are introduced to college-campus culture and to life in the dormitory. During the program, students also attend workshops and receive individual counseling on the college admissions process. Two sessions are held over the three-week period, one for rising juniors and one for rising seniors. Juniors will take courses in U.S. history and creative writing, and seniors will take neuroscience and African American history. Each class will meet for three hours each weekday. In addition, all students will take a studio art class, twice a week.
The total cost of Camp 4 Scholars, including tuition, accommodations, all meals, and activities, is $3,500.
