Through activities including hands-on laboratory experiments and field trips, participants will be introduced to exciting topics in engineering and biology. Engineering topics include mechanics, electrical circuits, communication and energy. Using simple materials and sensors, participants will build a prototype of a prosthetic arm. Bioscience topics include cell biology, anatomy and organ systems, function and structure of DNA, and an introduction to biomaterials. Participants will view cells under a microscope, analyze their own electrocardiograms, and make a silicone prosthetic mold from their own ear, nose, or thumb. Camp participants will learn about some of the unique research conducted at Duke University through guest speakers, lab demonstrations, activities in the Duke Interactive Sound Studio and a field trip to the world-renowned Duke Lemur Center.
