Despite remarkable progress over the last hundred years, women in the 21st century still face unique challenges in educational, career, social, and political arenas. In this course, students (1) analyze the position and portrayal of women in society, (2) explore how gender and other factors influence women’s leadership styles, and (3) propose strategies to facilitate inclusion and social justice for women. Students learn how both gender and leadership are socially constructed through experiential activities and readings from a variety of disciplines. They hone their communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills in interactive workshops and team-building exercises. Finally, they apply course concepts in their school or community through their capstone Action Plan project. Students in this class have the opportunity to “find their voice” and challenge themselves intellectually and personally. They create and participate in a supportive learning environment that promotes self-reflection, critical discourse, and community-building. Students leave the program with more consciousness, compassion, and confidence to effect positive change on behalf of women and the greater global citizenry. Please Note: This course is part of the Leadership Institute, a two-week academic program that helps students cultivate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with effective and socially responsible leadership. This unique program consists of three integrated elements: academic content, leadership development, and the Action Plan. Our students are thoughtful and compassionate youth who are interested in social issues and creating positive change. Participants can look forward to full days in a community of engaged and curious learners. Application process includes: online application, essay, transcript, application fee. Accepted Pre-College students may apply for Dean’s Scholarships, awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. Need is determined by considering several factors, including family income, family size, number of siblings in college, and housing expenses.
