This camp is open to students ages 12-18 (campers who are 18 and have not yet matriculated at a college are eligible to attend camp). No audition is required; all levels are welcome, although it is recommended that participants have at least one year of prior study on their instrument (violin, viola, cello, upright bass). A short placement audition will be held on the first day of camp (Sunday). We expect to have at least two orchestras, based on ability. Campers must provide their own instrument. The String Scholars camp features: daily orchestra rehearsals and finale concert with Richard Auldon Clark, conductor of the Butler Symphony Orchestra; daily sectionals and technique class with Butler faculty and music majors; other typical college music classes such as music theory and electives. Additional classes typically include drumming, dance, and keyboard. Special sessions will be held on topics of college readiness and access, including how to prepare for an audition, choosing a major or college, financial aid, career paths in music, and more. Housing is provided in Butler University's ResCo dorm, which is air-conditioned. Dorm check-in is 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening; check-out is Thursday evening after the recital. It is generally recommended that younger students attend as commuters if this is their first camp experience. Commuter campers check into camp from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday evening and attend camp from 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day. Camper information packets containing additional scheduling information, what to bring and where to report will be emailed to all participants approximately two weeks prior to camp. Early drop-off is also available. On Sunday, all campers, including commuters, should plan to attend sessions from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Registration form and $50 non-refundable deposit due by May 1; remaining tuition is due in full by June 1 for all campers, both residential and commuter. Payment can be made online by selecting "Make a Payment" on the BCAS homepage. All refund requests must be submitted via email to BCAS@butler.edu. No refunds will be issued after June 1. Late applications may be accepted on the basis of available space. Need-based scholarships are available for ages 18 and under; you may apply for scholarship on the camp registration form OR complete the separate Scholarship Application Form.
