Jazz Camp

Jazz camp is open to students ages 12-18 (campers who are 18 and have not yet matriculated at a college are eligible to attend camp) No audition is required for admission to camp; all levels are welcome, although it is strongly recommended that participants have at least one year of prior study on their instrument. We welcome all traditional Jazz instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, trombone, upright bass, guitar, piano, percussion, and voice (ages 15-18 only) as well as more non-traditional instruments such as flute, clarinet, oboe, or violin. If questions, please inquire at BCAS@butler.edu. A short theory placement test and placement audition will be held on the first day of camp (Sunday). During the placement audition, students will be asked to demonstrate the following: A piece of your choice (jazz-style piece preferred but not required); Scales (except for drummers) - Students will be asked appropriate scales for their level, Minimum requirements listed below: Concert Bb major scale, Concert Eb major scale, Concert F major scale, Concert Bb blues scale; Improvisation on Bb blues progression (optional, but encouraged); Sight reading; Bassists may be asked to demonstrate a bass line; Guitarists and pianists may be asked to demonstrate comping; Drummers will be asked to demonstrate several different types of grooves. Campers should provide their own instrument. Guitarists should bring their own amp. Registration form and $50 non-refundable deposit due by May 1; remaining tuition is due in full by June 1 for all campers, both residential and commuter. All refund requests must be submitted via email to BCAS@butler.edu. No refunds will be issued after June 1. Payments can be made online by selecting "Make a Payment" on the BCAS homepage. Late applications may be accepted on the basis of available space. Need-based scholarships are available for ages 18 and under; you may apply for scholarship on the camp registration form OR complete the separate Scholarship Application Form.
