BYU Musicians' SummerFestival is a six-day camp for talented musicians ages 14-18. Improve your musical skills with other young musicians from across the country. Live the college life on BYU's campus, associate with others passionate about music, and receive valuable instruction from world-renowned BYU music faculty. Participants attend concerts, recitals, comedy night, dances, a barbecue, and other social activities. At the end of the week you'll show off your newly improved talents in multiple concerts for family and friends. Musical experiences are available in band, orchestra, choral, and jazz ensembles, as well as chamber groups and solo performances. Located on the Brigham Young University campus, SummerFestival offers instruction in more than 20 instruments, including voice. Musical styles include classical, big band, jazz, blues, etc. Instruction is by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Instruction is offered at the intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant may enroll for the camp in one instrument only. Placement videos must be submitted prior to the camp and are used to assign students to ensembles and teachers. Placement Video Guidelines: One piece or excerpt, memorized, that demonstrates technique and expression. Record at visual angle so that the hands are visible. Time: 2-5 minutes. Participant placements are assigned by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Rehearsals begin on Monday morning. Participants receive daily private or semi-private lessons covering repertoire, technique, and sight-reading. Students also will attend daily piano literature and keyboard skills classes. Organ classes are also offered. Participants are required to bring to the SummerFestival two pieces, one memorized and ready to perform and the second in some state of preparation. Monday through Friday mornings, there will be classes in keyboard skills, including sight–reading, keyboard harmony, improvisation, technique, and playing by ear. Piano literature classes are organized by style periods, and students will have the opportunity to perform in these classes. Pianists also participate in daily choir rehearsals and will perform with the choir on Saturday.
