BYU Musicians' SummerFestival is a six-day camp for talented musicians ages 14-18. Improve your musical skills with other young musicians from across the country. Live the college life on BYU's campus, associate with others passionate about music, and receive valuable instruction from world-renowned BYU music faculty. Participants attend concerts, recitals, comedy night, dances, a barbecue, and other social activities. At the end of the week you'll show off your newly improved talents in multiple concerts for family and friends. Musical experiences are available in band, orchestra, choral, and jazz ensembles, as well as chamber groups and solo performances. Located on the Brigham Young University campus, SummerFestival offers instruction in more than 20 instruments, including voice. Musical styles include classical, big band, jazz, blues, etc. Instruction is by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Instruction is offered at the intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant may enroll for the camp in one instrument only.
Placement videos must be submitted prior to the camp and are used to assign students to ensembles and teachers. Placement Video Guidelines: One or more pieces or excerpts that demonstrate technique and expression. Time: 2 - 5 minutes. Participant placements are assigned by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Rehearsals begin on Monday morning. Clarinetists can expect to participate in one or more of these groups: orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, clarinet choir, or other chamber ensembles. There will also be daily master classes and sectionals. Bass Clarinet ranges: from lowest E to C above the staff.
Daily master classes will focus on a different clarinet skill each day, as well as rehearsing the music for the ensembles and chamber groups. Students should bring their instrument, five or more good (preferably new) reeds, and whatever solo or chamber music and etude books they would like to work on during the week. Students can request limited private coaching if it is available.
