BYU Musicians' SummerFestival is a six-day camp for talented musicians ages 14-18. Improve your musical skills with other young musicians from across the country. Live the college life on BYU's campus, associate with others passionate about music, and receive valuable instruction from world-renowned BYU music faculty. Participants attend concerts, recitals, comedy night, dances, a barbecue, and other social activities. At the end of the week you'll show off your newly improved talents in multiple concerts for family and friends. Musical experiences are available in band, orchestra, choral, and jazz ensembles, as well as chamber groups and solo performances. Located on the Brigham Young University campus, SummerFestival offers instruction in more than 20 instruments, including voice. Musical styles include classical, big band, jazz, blues, etc. Instruction is by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Instruction is offered at the intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant may enroll for the camp in one instrument only. Placement videos must be submitted prior to the camp and are used to assign students to ensembles and teachers. Placement Video Guidelines: One or more pieces or excerpts that demonstrate technique and expression. Time: 2–5 minutes. Participant placements are assigned by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Rehearsals begin on Monday morning. String players participate in theory classes, music literature classes, chamber music, jazz bassists (if assigned), orchestra, and master classes. Players should know major and minor scales, five sharps through four flats, through fifth position; be able to sight–read syncopated rhythms; be familiar with uneven time signatures; and be familiar with these bowings: legato, detache, marcato (martele), uneven combinations of slurs, hooked bowings, spiccato, staccato (separate), portato, easy ricochet, flautato, slurred eighth notes, ponticello, and string-crossing slurs. Your schedule Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will include band, orchestra, choir, or jazz ensemble rehearsals, as well as sectionals and master classes (depending on your instrument). You may also choose from music history, theory, and other electives to complete your daily schedules.
