This intensive course uses a wide range of approaches to drawing the human figure. Working from the nude model, students investigate gesture with an emphasis on conceptualizing the main skeletal and muscle structures of the body. Proportion and expressive use of exaggeration are discussed relative to gesture. As the students become more adept at capturing the main movements of a pose, their drawings are directed towards form building and composition involving the use of value, light and shadow. This is approached in a variety of media (charcoal, ink and conte). Color (dry pastel) is introduced in the last section of the course, with emphasis on understanding how colors interrelate and how color layering is used to create realistic skin tones and form. Advanced Studio Concepts gives the serious high school junior, senior or graduate the opportunity for a focused studio experience that reflects the dynamic environment of MIAD’s First Year Experience. You are challenged to ask deep questions about the nature of contemporary art and design, media, materials, influences and process. We want you to craft answers that they feel are important to their visual identity, and focus on new ways of seeing, thinking, creating, and communicating. Inquiry and research-based modes of teaching help you connect and contextualize the work you create. An important goal for Advanced Studio Concepts is the development of a portfolio that illustrates the talent and skill essential for entrance to colleges of art and design. Students must submit 10 slides of original work to be considered for this program. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (3 MIAD college credits) Advanced ability level.
