Explore the basics of advertising elements such as form, typography, digital production, 3D design and a conceptual approach to problem solving. The course is broken down into three parts. Week 1 Form & Color Instructor: Richard Mehl Unconventional advertising begins with unconventional design-strong, dynamic, original and memorable compositions of form and color. Making unconventional design is more successful (and a lot less stressful) when you understand the basic principles of two-dimensional design and color. In this workshop, students work on a series of assignments; each assignment is an exploration of specific design concepts. Through these explorations, your awareness of form and color grows-you become a more confident designer. Each day is a new design experience. We transform a classroom into a studio, a space to explore, experiment and play with form and color. Week 2 Advertising Instructor: Neil Raphan This advertising workshop offers an introduction into the creative world of advertising and teaches how to come up with great ideas. Our primary focus will be 'the idea'. You'll learn how your idea can be strengthened by communicating to a target with an integrated 360° approach. Print, web, social media, tv, ambient, guerilla-every medium will be explored. You'll also be taught how to use your strengths and interests from other visual fields such as Design, Photography, Illustration, and Typography and apply toward advertising. Each student will be provided with their own mac workstation in a group setting and create work in class. Visual assignments/exercises will also be given to strengthen your art direction skills. We will perform critiques of student work and encourage class participation to strengthen conceptual thinking. You will leave with several pieces of exciting work for your portfolio. Week 3 3D Concepts in Advertising Instructor: Kevin O'Callaghan Students will reimagine and create their own unique dimensional advertisements, using everything from fiberglass to hubcaps: whatever conveys the student's ideas. There will be demonstrations of various techniques like mold-making, paper and cardboard construction and casting in plastic. Each student will create and produce a highly personal, finished conceptually-driven solution to a conceptual problem. Please note: Pre-College courses may include the use of nude models. Course curriculum and faculty are subject to change.
